Caribbean Countries with Government Funded Scholarships for Tertiary Studies

The availability of government scholarships to finance post-secondary studies in many Caribbean countries varies greatly. This is due to the fact that there is a significant disparity across countries in terms of the allocation of government funds to finance higher education. Government financing of tertiary studies may be limited by geography, level of study, budgets etc.

*** There is a cap on the local funds allocated to finance higher education. Full scholarships are typically financed via foreign governments offering full funding.

National Scholarships in Barbados

The Government of Barbados, via the Ministry of Education, offers partial and full scholarships to school leavers that have earned top grades in their CAPE examinations: partial scholarships are called Exhibitions.  While, there are no restrictions on the place or program of study, there is a preference for undergraduate bachelor’s degree programs as opposed to post-secondary diplomas, associate degrees or certificates.

Additionally, the government also offers national development scholarships to fund undergraduate or graduate studies in program areas which are of national priority. Scholarships are available on an annual basis and candidate undergo a rigorous selection process.

Expenses covered by the scholarships may include:

Full CAPE and National Development Scholarships: Full tuition, living allowance and annual travel
CAPE Exhibitions (partial): Tuition (calculated based on UWI program fees) and annual travel
