Caribbean Mobility Snapshot: What's Trending
with Sheena Alleyne, Managing Director - The Student Centre
Student mobility expectations for 2020 have been reconfigured as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which continues to grapple countries worldwide. The virus brought a surge of uncertainty and financial instability to many industries and sectors. When it comes to student mobility trends for 2020, the outlook is still filled with optimism. Here is what’s trending:
- It is estimated that approximately 60 percent of students that have applied to commence overseas studies for 2020 will defer their start dates until they are able to travel.
- Health and safety, going forward, will be a top concern of parents and students when choosing a study destination.
- Canada remains the leading destination of choice among Caribbean students seeking to study abroad. It is expected that this trend will continue given the increased instability in the US arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and anti-racism protests
- Uncertainty continues to loom over the US market when it comes to Caribbean student mobility. Safety is a major concern among potential students and parents considering the US as a possibly study destination. The growing concern stems from the rising number of COVID-19 cases, uncertainty when it comes to access to healthcare coupled with the recent spark of racially charged incidences across the country.
- There will be a greater focus on career guidance when it comes to college and university preparation among students and parents in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Prospective students and parents may be more financially cautious when considering schools and programs.

- Guyana will be a market to watch following the recently held problematic elections in early March of 2020. The impasse on the election results have stalled the official installation of a government and concerns regarding the country’s political and social climate continue to grow.

Caribbean Student Mobility Index
The Caribbean Student Mobility Index was developed to help measure the movement of Caribbean students studying abroad.
The index was created to better map the flow of students outside of the region.

How it Works
|
The index concentrates on socio-economic factors which could influence student mobility from which a value is determined based on a set scale. Such factors help to constitute a criterion which covers areas such as the strength of the economy, standard of living, safety, education, immigration, and access to finance.
|
The index functions as a rubric, where each category is assigned a score. Based on the criteria met in each category, a corresponding value is assigned. The index is based on a total scale of twenty-Four (24) points.
|
Countries are evaluated against the criterion. The value assigned to a country is determined on the total score calculated across each category. Countries scoring closer to twenty have a positive outlook when it comes to potential student mobility.
